This safari covers two of the premier parks in Zambia – The South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi – with Livingstone, home to the spectacular Victoria Falls, and Kafue offering two exciting tour extensions. The Luangwa Valley is truly one of the last unspoiled wilderness areas in and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. The Luangwa river flows into the Zambezi River – just below the Lower Zambezi National Park. This park, scenically bordered by an impressive escarpment, has excellent game, which can be viewed from either the river or by land. Quietly drifting past a huge elephant feeding by canoe or boat is a great experience. See you there…
Day 1: On arrival at Mfuwe International Airport you will be met and transferred to Kaingo Camp, a 2 hour drive through colourful local villages and countryside before entering the Park. Kaingo Camp has sweeping views of the Luangwa river and is ideally situated for the start of your safari. The five chalets all look out over the river and all have en suite bathrooms. Depending on your arrival time in the day you will enjoy a lunch looking out over the river before going out on your first afternoon game drive after tea has been served.
Days 2 – 3: At dawn breakfast is served around the campfire. The porridge heated on the fire and toast cooked by the coals. The morning walk or drive will leave soon after – being right in the Park your game viewing starts right from camp (and often in camp itself!). The game in the area is excellent – and includes many family herds of elephants and the endemic species of giraffe, the Thornicroft Giraffe. A mid morning break of tea, coffee and cake will be taken at a scenic point on a lagoon or the Luangwa River. Return to camp for lunch around mid day. After lunch you can relax or siesta. Following tea you will go out on an afternoon game drive that continues into the early night giving you the chance to see the nocturnal world, returning to camp about 20.00 hrs with dinner generally at 20.30.
Day 4: After breakfast around the camp fire, your safari will continue with morning and evening game activities and the possibility of sighting the ever exclusive leopards which frequent the area. Today is a chance to drive or walk through the ebony groves. Or you may decide this is an ideal day, depending on the heat and time of year, to explore the Mwamba sector of the National Park possibly with an all day picnic drive to the salt pans that will cover different habitats and is an exceptional day’s safari.
Day 5: After an early breakfast, transfer to Mfuwe Airport (2 hours) for the flight to Lusaka (1.5 hours) and then onto the Lower Zambezi (30 mins). As you fly into the area, you will see the wide Zambezi River, dotted with islands. Buffalo and elephant are always seen feeding along with the pods of hippos that rest on the edge of the sandbanks. The transfer to Chiawa is a short 20 to 30 min trip in an open game viewing vehicle. You will have lunch on the banks of the Zambezi followed by some time to relax and recuperate. After tea you will take your first game drive to explore the region and enjoy the company of one of Chiawa’s experienced guides.
Day 6: Today you can continue with the drives or walks or you may wish to take advantage of the fantastic fishing opportunities. The Zambezi is home to one of the world’s premiere game fish, the tiger. The Zambezi variety can grow up to 10 -12 Kg and is a superb fighting fish. A strict catch and release policy is adhered to.
Canoeing for a morning or even the whole day is another option which is worth considering – with an experienced guide leading the way you can drift down the river taking in the sights and sounds. The Lower Zambezi is renowned for superb canoeing safaris – the most unobtrusive way to encounter big game.
Days 7 – 8: Today you will transfer to Old Mondoro bush camp for 2 nights of remote seclusion in this rustic and charming small camp. Activities on offer focus more on land based options – walking and game drives to the many remote areas in search of exciting sightings of the abundant wildlife.
Day 9: After breakfast you will be transferred to Jeki airstrip for your charter flight to Lusaka and onwards to Livingstone or the Kafue depending on your choice of tour extension.
